Kacific Broadband Satellites Group, in collaboration with local partners PT Bis Data Indonesia (Bignet) and PT Primacom Interbuana (Primacom), has completed the deployment of over 2,500 satellite internet access sites in a record time of five months. This project is part of BAKTI’s initiative to provide satellite internet access for government infrastructure in remote regions.
BAKTI utilizes and manages funds from the Universal Service Obligation (USO) to develop telecommunication infrastructure and services. One of its major projects is delivering internet access to 3T regions (frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped areas), which are considered commercially non-viable.
In this project, Kacific, Bignet, and Primacom collaborated with BAKTI to provide high-speed satellite internet access to schools, vocational training centers, public health facilities, tourist sites, village halls, and government offices. The biggest challenge was the logistics involved in covering numerous islands and remote locations across Indonesia.
Kacific is one of the largest service providers for the BAKTI project due to its ability to supply high-speed bandwidth at the most competitive prices. Additionally, Kacific is the only provider offering Ka-band satellite services with speeds exceeding 85 Mbps, easily meeting BAKTI’s 10 Mbps speed requirement.
The satellite service will also support the expansion and improvement of transmission services for BAKTI’s BTS Lastmile program and other initiatives. “The Indonesian government has shown outstanding leadership in its vision to connect all its citizens,” said Christian Patouraux, CEO of Kacific, in a statement on Tuesday, June 14, 2022.
According to Patouraux, Indonesia has swiftly implemented its impressive national connectivity plan, and BAKTI has successfully managed the connectivity project. He added that many countries could benefit greatly from adopting a similar approach to bridging the digital divide.
The BAKTI project aligns with Kacific’s mission to bridge the digital divide by providing affordable high-speed internet access in the most remote and underserved areas. Satellite internet access is an excellent option for quickly connecting communities due to its ability to reach population pockets in geographically challenging areas.
“With this satellite connectivity project, we are taking a significant step forward in achieving our goal of equitable information and communication technology, to strengthen national unity, drive economic growth, and enhance national resilience against disasters and emergencies,” added Bambang Noegroho, Director of Infrastructure at BAKTI.
In completing the project, Christian Patouraux acknowledged the collaboration with Bignet and Primacom. Both of Kacific’s partners were recognized for their expertise and vital roles in managing large-scale telecommunications projects.
Bignet, Kacific’s partner since 2015—well before its first satellite launch—believed that Ka-Band HTS would be a game changer in Indonesia’s satellite industry. In 2020, BAKTI awarded Bignet a contract for over 4 Gbps, covering more than 2,000 sites across Indonesia, mostly in the eastern regions where internet connectivity is the lowest compared to the western regions.
